Why your nose may run when eating

Short answer
A runny nose during meals can be a food-triggered reflex, but allergy or another nasal condition should be considered when other symptoms appear.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Meal pattern
- Watery discharge only during eating can reflect a nasal reflex.
- Allergy warning
- Hives, swelling, wheeze, vomiting, or faintness after food need urgent attention.
Why eating can trigger nasal discharge
Some people develop watery nasal discharge while eating, particularly with hot, spicy, or strongly seasoned food. This is called a food-triggered nasal reflex and may happen without infection. The pattern can be different from [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/), which often includes sneezing, nasal itching, or itchy watery eyes after exposure to a trigger.
A runny nose that occurs outside meals may instead fit a [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) or another condition. Sudden swelling of the lips or tongue, hives, wheezing, vomiting, or faintness after food can indicate a serious allergic reaction and needs urgent help.
What to try
Keep a short diary of the food, temperature, portion, timing, and any other symptoms. Try milder temperatures and flavours if they reliably trigger discharge, and keep tissues available. Do not deliberately re-test a food that has caused hives, swelling, breathing symptoms, or faintness. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss treatment if the reflex is frequent or disruptive; avoid borrowing prescription nasal sprays.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if symptoms are persistent, one-sided, bloody, associated with facial pain, or accompanied by a reduced sense of smell. Seek emergency help immediately for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, tongue or facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or repeated vomiting after eating. These features require urgent evaluation rather than home observation.
Questions for your doctor
Does this sound like a food-triggered nasal reflex or an allergy? Should I avoid a particular food until review? Would a nasal treatment be appropriate for my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Why does my nose run when I eat spicy food?
Hot or spicy food can stimulate nerves in the nose and produce watery discharge. This can occur without an infection or food allergy.
Is a runny nose while eating a food allergy?
Not by itself. Allergy is more concerning when nasal symptoms occur with hives, swelling, breathing problems, vomiting, or faintness.
