Runny nose while teething: what to know

During teething, babies may chew, drool, have tender gums, and sleep poorly. Clear nasal discharge can happen at the same time without being caused by the tooth itself. A blocked or runny nose with sneezing, cough, fever, reduced feeding, or a change in energy may fit a viral infection such as the [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/). Repeated symptoms around dust or animals can suggest allergy, including [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) or [Pet Allergy](/conditions/pet-allergy/).

Watch the child rather than attributing every symptom to teething. Note feeding, wet nappies, breathing, temperature, and whether the discharge is affecting sleep.

Offer fluids or usual feeds frequently. A cool teething ring can soothe gums; avoid frozen objects and products that numb the mouth unless a clinician recommends them. Saline nose drops and gentle clearing can help a blocked nose. Keep smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air away from the child. Never give a child an over-the-counter cold medicine without checking its age suitability with a pharmacist or clinician.

Contact a clinician if the child is drinking much less, has fewer wet nappies, seems unusually sleepy, or has a fever or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help for difficult or noisy breathing, blue or grey lips, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down.
