Short answer

Running a fever calls for fluids, rest, symptom monitoring and medical advice when it persists or comes with warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding a continuing fever

Fever is the body's response to many infections and does not identify one cause on its own. The pattern of symptoms matters: cough and congestion may accompany a common cold or acute bronchitis, while a barking cough can occur with croup. A rash, painful skin area, breathing symptoms, urinary changes or recent travel can point the assessment in different directions.

Record when the fever began, how it changes, associated symptoms, fluid intake and any medicine taken. A thermometer reading can help, but how the person looks, breathes and responds is also clinically useful.

What you can do

Offer frequent fluids and allow rest. Dress lightly, keep the room comfortable and follow the label or clinician's directions for any suitable fever medicine. Do not combine products without checking their ingredients. Keep children away from school or childcare while unwell and reduce close contact with vulnerable people. Arrange a clinical review if the fever is not settling, repeatedly returns, or the person is becoming less able to drink or function.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, severe dehydration, a rapidly spreading rash, or unusual difficulty waking. Babies, older adults, pregnant people and those with weakened immunity may need earlier advice. Do not delay assessment because a fever medicine temporarily lowers the temperature.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what cause is most consistent with the full symptom pattern, how to monitor at home, which medicines are suitable, and what change should trigger urgent review.
