What should you know about a RUL lung nodule?

RUL means right upper lobe. A nodule may reflect scar tissue, a previous infection, inflammation, or a tumour; an image alone cannot identify the cause. The radiology report may describe its size, edge, density, and whether it has changed compared with earlier scans. These details help a clinician estimate concern and choose the next step.

A CT scan gives more detail than a standard chest X-ray. Some nodules can be watched with repeat imaging, while others need tissue sampling. A biopsy removes cells or a small tissue sample for laboratory examination; its suitability depends on the nodule's position and your overall health.

Arrange a review with the clinician who ordered the scan, and bring any older chest images or reports. Ask whether the nodule is new, whether its appearance needs a closer CT scan, and what interval is appropriate for follow-up. Do not miss planned imaging, because comparison over time can be more informative than one picture.
