The condition is especially significant in pregnancy because infection can affect fetal development.

Stay home from close social contact while seeking advice, particularly around anyone who is pregnant or has not had protection against rubella. Cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands regularly, and avoid sharing drinks or utensils. Contact a GP consultation by phone first and describe the rash, fever, contact history, and vaccination history. Keep a note of when symptoms began. A clinician can decide whether examination, testing, or notification advice is needed. MMR vaccination prevents future rubella infection but is not a treatment for an illness already underway.

Arrange prompt assessment for a new rash with fever, known rubella contact, or any possible exposure during pregnancy. Call before attending a clinic to help prevent transmission. Seek urgent help if you have trouble breathing, severe drowsiness, confusion, fainting, or rapid deterioration. Those symptoms require immediate assessment regardless of whether rubella is the cause.
