Rubella vaccination

The rubella component is commonly given as part of the combined MMR vaccine. It trains immune defences to respond more quickly if the virus is encountered later. Vaccination also helps reduce circulation of rubella, protecting people who are pregnant or cannot receive a live vaccine. It does not treat an existing rubella infection, and it cannot replace assessment after a recent exposure. Ask a GP consultation service or vaccination provider to check your documented immunisations and whether MMR is suitable for you. Mention pregnancy, plans to become pregnant, immune-system conditions, severe previous vaccine reactions and medicines that affect immunity. If your records are incomplete, a clinician can explain whether further vaccination or a blood test is useful. After vaccination, mild soreness, fever or a brief rash can occur; follow the service's advice about symptom relief and monitoring.

Contact a clinician if symptoms after vaccination are persistent, severe or worrying. Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, collapse, or a rapidly worsening reaction. If you develop a rash and fever after contact with someone who has rubella, call before attending a clinic because the illness can spread. Vaccination does not remove the need for assessment after a known exposure.
