Rubella and swollen glands behind the ears

Lymph nodes behind the ears can enlarge when the immune system responds to an infection in nearby skin, the scalp, or the respiratory tract. Rubella commonly presents with swollen glands behind the ears or neck, sometimes followed by a fine rash and mild fever. Joint pain may occur, especially in adults.

The location of a lump does not diagnose rubella. A clinician considers its tenderness, movement, duration, other symptoms, vaccination history, and possible exposure. Other viral illnesses and local infections can produce similar swelling.

Arrange a GP consultation if the swelling is new, persists, grows, or appears with rash or fever. Rest, drink fluids, and avoid repeatedly pressing the glands. If rubella is possible, limit close contact with pregnant people until you have received medical advice, because infection can be harmful during pregnancy. Check vaccination records rather than relying on memory.

Seek prompt assessment for swollen glands with a new rash, fever, or known rubella exposure, particularly if you are pregnant or may be pregnant. Get urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, severe weakness, confusion, or a serious allergic reaction. A hard or fixed lump, night sweats, or unexplained ongoing symptoms also deserves medical review.
