RSV and Hives: What to Know

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear, fade and reappear in different places. A viral illness may accompany a hive outbreak, but medicines, foods, contact exposures and other infections can also be involved. The presence of hives does not by itself identify RSV.

Some people also develop deeper swelling of the lips, eyelids, hands or feet, known as angioedema. A rash that stays fixed in one spot, bruises, blisters or causes significant pain may not be ordinary hives and deserves medical review.

Note when the welts began, how long each one lasts, recent medicines and possible exposures. Keep the skin cool, avoid scratching and use loose clothing. A clinician or pharmacist may recommend oral antihistamine treatment, taking age, pregnancy, other medicines and medical conditions into account. Do not give a child a medicine unless the label or a clinician supports that choice.

Continue appropriate care for the respiratory illness and watch hydration and breathing, especially in infants and older adults. Photographing a fleeting rash can help a clinician assess it after the welts have faded.

Seek emergency help immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion or a rapidly worsening reaction. Arrange prompt review for persistent vomiting, poor drinking, marked lethargy, worsening chest symptoms or a rash with bruising or blistering. Oral corticosteroid treatment is sometimes considered by a clinician for selected severe cases; it is not a self-treatment.

Ask whether the pattern fits hives, whether any new medicine could be responsible, which antihistamine is suitable, and which breathing or swelling changes require emergency action. Mention the person's age and any asthma or allergy history.
