Routine Growth Scan: What to Know

During the scan, measurements of the baby’s head, abdomen, and thigh bone help estimate size and follow growth over time. The sonographer may also look at the placenta, amniotic fluid, movement, presentation, and blood flow in selected vessels. A scan is a snapshot, and an estimated size is not the same as a direct measurement of weight.

Your clinician may suggest a growth scan because of a previous pregnancy concern, a medical condition, changes in fundal height, reduced movements, or another finding. The result is interpreted alongside your dates, examination, symptoms, and earlier scans.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to your abdomen and bring your pregnancy records if requested. Follow the appointment instructions about eating, drinking, or bladder preparation; these can vary by pregnancy stage and clinic. You can ask whether a support person may attend and when the report will be discussed.

If measurements are outside the expected pattern, the next step may be repeat imaging, Doppler assessment, monitoring, or a review with your obstetric team. This finding alone does not predict the outcome of the pregnancy.

A scheduled scan does not replace urgent assessment. Contact your maternity service promptly for reduced or changed fetal movements, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular painful contractions, severe headache with visual changes, or sudden severe abdominal pain.

Ask why the scan is recommended, which measurements will be reviewed, whether Doppler blood flow is needed, and how the findings could change monitoring. Ask when and how you will receive the result, especially if a repeat scan is suggested.
