What should you know about round red rash?

A ring-shaped patch with a scaly or raised border can occur with Ringworm. Thick, dry, sharply outlined areas may occur with Psoriasis, while itchy inflamed skin after contact with a product can occur with Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis may present with itchy, dry patches. Heat, moisture, and friction can contribute to Heat Rash or Intertrigo. Scabies often causes intense itching and may affect household contacts. A Drug Rash may begin after a new medicine. These patterns overlap, so a photograph and examination are more useful than shape alone.

Note when the patch began, whether it is enlarging, and whether there is scale, oozing, pain, or itch. Avoid new fragranced products and scratching; wash gently, pat dry, and keep skin folds cool and dry. Do not share towels or clothing if a contagious cause is possible. Arrange a dermatology assessment if the rash persists, keeps returning, or needs treatment chosen for its cause.

Seek urgent medical help for a rash with facial swelling, trouble breathing, blistering, skin peeling, severe pain, fever, or involvement of the eyes or mouth. Prompt assessment is also sensible when redness is rapidly spreading, the area is warm and tender, or pus develops.
