What should you know about round lump under skin?

A tender, red lump may be a boil or another inflamed lesion. A smooth, mobile lump can have a benign explanation, but touch alone cannot identify every mass. A spot that repeatedly crusts, bleeds, ulcerates, or fails to heal needs examination because basal cell carcinoma can sometimes present as a changing skin lesion. The symptom of a skin lump is not a diagnosis; location, duration, surface, and examination findings matter.

Do not squeeze, pierce, or repeatedly press the lump. Note when it appeared, whether it changes, and whether the skin over it is red, warm, scaly, or broken. Photographing it beside a familiar object can help show change over time. A clinician may observe it, examine it with magnification, or recommend another test. Intralesional steroid injection is used only for selected diagnosed inflammatory or scar-related lesions.

Book a prompt appointment if the lump is growing, hard, fixed, painful, recurrent, or associated with bleeding, crusting, an open sore, or unexplained skin change. Seek urgent care for severe pain with spreading redness, fever, or feeling very unwell. Get immediate help for facial swelling or breathing difficulty.

Ask what the lump appears to be, whether it needs monitoring or testing, and which changes should trigger an earlier review. Mention recent injury, injections, shaving, infection, medicines, and whether the lump moves beneath the skin.
