What should you know about round bumps on skin?

Small rough bumps around hair follicles may fit keratosis pilaris, while tender or pus-filled bumps can occur with folliculitis. Tiny firm white bumps may be milia. Heat rash tends to appear where sweat and friction affect the skin. Flat-topped or itchy purplish bumps can have a different cause, such as lichen planus. A photo, timeline, and note of new products or medicines can help a clinician compare these patterns.

Avoid squeezing, picking, scrubbing, or sharing towels. Wash gently, keep sweaty skin cool and dry, and pause any product that seems to sting or trigger the bumps. Use a bland moisturizer if the surface feels dry. A clinician can advise whether an antihistamine treatment is appropriate for itch or whether cryotherapy (lesion removal) fits a specific diagnosed lesion; these are not general treatments for every bump.

Arrange medical assessment if bumps are rapidly changing, painful, warm, draining, bleeding, spreading, or accompanied by fever. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a severe widespread reaction. Otherwise, book a dermatology visit when the bumps persist, recur, or remain unexplained despite gentle care.
