Rough Bumps on Arms: What They May Mean

Small, evenly spaced bumps on the outer upper arms commonly fit keratosis pilaris, in which keratin collects around follicles. Red, tender, or pus-filled bumps can occur with folliculitis. A sudden itchy crop after sweating may fit heat rash. Firm, flat-topped or violaceous bumps deserve an examination because conditions such as lichen planus can look different from follicle plugging. Tiny pearly bumps may be milia.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then apply a thick moisturiser while the skin is still damp. Avoid harsh scrubbing, picking, tight sleeves, and shaving over inflamed areas. A clinician can match treatment to the pattern; antihistamine treatment may help itch in suitable cases, while cryotherapy is reserved for selected lesions rather than widespread roughness.

Arrange a dermatology review if bumps are painful, draining, rapidly spreading, persist despite gentle care, or leave scars. Seek prompt care for fever, marked warmth, swelling, or red streaking. An itchy rash after a new product, medicine, or exposure also merits advice if it continues or affects sleep.

Ask whether the bumps involve follicles, what products or ingredients to stop, and whether a moisturising or prescription treatment fits your skin. Mention itch, pain, pus, recent shaving, sweating, new medicines, and how the texture has changed.
