What should you know about rosacea and Protopic?

Protopic contains tacrolimus, and its role in rosacea should be decided by a clinician after checking the diagnosis. Tacrolimus changes local immune signalling in the skin; it is not a general-purpose moisturiser and should not be started on a facial rash without medical advice.

Facial redness, burning, scaling, or bumps can have several causes. Rosacea, eczema, contact dermatitis, acne, infection, and irritation may need different approaches. Tacrolimus is a topical calcineurin inhibitor used for selected inflammatory conditions, and it may be considered when a clinician believes inflammation is driving the rash. Its use for rosacea can be individual and may not address visible vessels or flushing.

Contact the prescriber if the rash worsens, develops crusting or pus, or does not improve as expected. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, trouble breathing, severe eye pain, or vision changes. Ask before applying tacrolimus near the eyes or using it on an area with a suspected infection, because those situations need specific assessment.
