Rosacea-like demodicosis: what to know

Demodex mites are microscopic organisms associated with hair follicles and oil glands. Skin inflammation linked with them may look like rosacea, with rough texture, sensitivity, scaling around the nose or eyebrows, and follicle-based bumps. Similar changes can also arise from acne, dermatitis or rosacea itself. A dermatologist considers the distribution, surface scale, symptoms and response to earlier treatment; a close examination or sample may sometimes be used. The presence of mites alone does not prove that they are causing the rash.

Keep the routine simple: cleanse gently, moisturise, avoid harsh scrubs and wash makeup tools regularly. Do not try household insect treatments or apply veterinary products to the face. A clinician may prescribe a targeted anti-mite medicine and explain how long to use it.
