What should you know about ROS measurement by flow cytometry?

Reactive oxygen species, often shortened to ROS, are chemically active molecules produced during normal cell activity and in response to stress. In the laboratory, cells are mixed with a probe that changes its fluorescent signal when it reacts with a selected ROS or related chemical process. A flow cytometer passes cells through a laser beam, records their light signals and groups cells with similar features.

The result is a laboratory measurement, not a stand-alone diagnosis. Signal strength can be influenced by the probe, sample handling, cell type and timing. Clinicians interpret it with the reason for testing and other findings. In oncology or blood disorders, flow cytometry may also examine cell markers that help identify abnormal cell populations.

Ask which ROS was assessed, what cells were tested and whether the result is being compared with a control sample. Confirm whether the test is exploratory or part of a diagnostic work-up. If the sample came from bone marrow, ask how the ROS result relates to the morphology, blood counts and other flow-cytometry markers.

Follow up with the ordering team if the report is unclear or recommends another sample. Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding or a high fever with marked weakness. A laboratory ROS result should not delay assessment of an acute illness.
