A laboratory prepares thin sections from a tissue specimen. Antibodies are added to attach to particular proteins. A detection system creates a coloured signal where the target is found, and a pathologist examines the pattern, location and strength of staining. The result can help distinguish tumour types or show whether a biomarker is present.

Ventana refers to Roche laboratory instruments and testing systems used for automated staining and related workflows. The method does not examine every feature of a cancer and cannot be interpreted without the tissue appearance, clinical history and other results. Some findings are reported as positive, negative, equivocal or requiring further review, depending on the marker.
