What should you know about robotic surgery for hernia repair?

A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weak place in muscle or connective tissue. Robotic repair may involve moving the protruding tissue back, closing the defect and placing mesh when the surgeon considers it appropriate. The system is guided continuously by the surgeon and is not an independent machine.

A hiatus hernia is at the opening where the oesophagus passes through the diaphragm, while other hernias affect the abdominal wall. Your assessment may include symptoms such as Heartburn, indigestion or Excessive Burping, along with examination and sometimes imaging. Acid Reflux may need separate treatment even after repair.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, smoking, previous operations and any difficulty swallowing. Follow fasting instructions and arrange help for the first part of recovery. Walk gently as advised, keep incisions clean and avoid straining or heavy lifting until cleared. Seek prompt advice for increasing pain, persistent vomiting, feverishness, a swollen or painful lump, wound redness or discharge, or difficulty passing urine. Emergency help is needed for severe chest or abdominal pain, fainting, breathing trouble, vomiting blood, black stools, or sudden inability to swallow. New or worsening Heartburn or Indigestion should be mentioned at follow-up.
