What should you know about rnid hearing test?

Short answer

An RNID hearing test checks how well you detect different sounds and helps identify the type and degree of hearing change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens during testing

A hearing professional may ask about noise exposure, infections, ringing, dizziness, and changes in one or both ears. You then listen through headphones or inserts and respond when you hear tones or speech. The results can show whether sound is being detected less well and whether the pattern suggests an outer, middle, or inner ear problem. Ear blockage, including earwax buildup, can affect hearing and may need separate assessment.

Before and after the test

Bring details of medicines, previous ear problems, and any hearing devices. Mention whether people seem to mumble, conversations are harder in noise, or one ear is different. Do not put objects into the ear canal before an appointment. Afterward, ask for a plain-language explanation, whether a repeat test is needed, and what support could make conversations easier.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for gradually worsening hearing, persistent tinnitus, ear pain, discharge, or repeated difficulty following conversations. Seek urgent medical help for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing loss with severe dizziness, facial weakness, or a severe headache. Sudden change should not be attributed to earwax without professional examination.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the result shows conductive or inner-ear hearing loss, whether the ears need examination, and whether referral to audiology or an ear specialist is appropriate. If dizziness or attacks of hearing change occur, ask how conditions such as Meniere's disease are assessed.

Questions people ask

Does a hearing test hurt?

The listening tasks should not hurt, although an ear examination or blocked ear may feel uncomfortable.

Can earwax affect the result?

Yes. A blockage can reduce sound reaching the eardrum, so the ear may need checking before results are interpreted.
