What should you know about ringworm treatment for dogs?

Ringworm is a fungal infection that may cause circular hair loss, broken hairs, crusting, scaling or itchy skin. Dogs can carry or spread the fungus with few visible changes, and other skin problems can resemble it. A veterinarian may examine hairs or skin to confirm the cause.

Treatment can involve a topical product, medicated washing, oral antifungal medicine, or a combination. The choice depends on the dog's age, health, affected areas and other medicines. Improvement in appearance does not always mean the infection has cleared.

Give medicines exactly as prescribed and prevent licking when the veterinarian advises. Wash hands after handling the dog, wear gloves for topical care, and keep grooming tools, bedding and blankets separate. Vacuum or clean areas where the dog rests, following veterinary advice about suitable disinfectants.

Limit contact with other pets and vulnerable people until the veterinarian explains when normal contact is reasonable. Have other animals checked if they develop hair loss, scaling or a new rash. Do not shave the coat or apply household products without professional direction, because this can irritate skin or spread contamination.

Seek prompt veterinary care for lesions near the eyes, widespread hair loss, painful or oozing skin, marked lethargy, poor appetite, or a dog that cannot tolerate treatment. Contact a clinician if a household member develops an itchy or scaly rash after exposure. A recurring problem may require repeat testing and a review of environmental sources.
