Ringworm scientific name: what it means

Tinea is a medical term for infection caused by dermatophyte fungi. Corporis means of the body, so tinea corporis describes dermatophyte infection on areas such as the trunk, arms or legs. The name changes when fungi affect another body site, which is why a clinician may use a different tinea term for the scalp, feet or nails. Ringworm often produces an expanding, scaly edge and clearer-looking centre, but other rashes can resemble it. A clinician may assess the pattern and, when needed, examine skin material to confirm the diagnosis.

Keep the area clean and dry, avoid scratching, and do not share towels, clothing or sports equipment until the infection has been assessed. Treatment may involve a cream or lotion applied to the skin; more extensive or hard-to-reach infection may need medicine taken by mouth.
