Ringworm that looks like pimples

A fungal rash may have small raised spots, especially where sweat and friction are present, and nearby scale can be subtle. Acne more often centres on blocked pores, while folliculitis affects hair follicles and may be sore or pus-filled. Ringworm tends to enlarge outward and may have a scaly border. These patterns overlap, so squeezing bumps or judging them from a photograph can lead to the wrong treatment.

Wash gently, pat dry and wear loose clothing that reduces heat and rubbing. Avoid picking, shaving over the area, sharing towels and applying several new products at once. If a clinician or pharmacist thinks it is ringworm, use the advised topical antifungal as directed. A broader or persistent eruption may need an examination and, in selected cases, oral antifungal treatment.

Arrange an appointment if bumps spread, become painful, drain pus, form crusts, or do not improve with appropriate care. Seek prompt help for fever, rapidly spreading redness, eye-area involvement, or a rash in someone with reduced immunity. Review is especially useful when acne treatments have made the area more irritated or when the diagnosis remains uncertain.

Ask whether the bumps arise from hair follicles, whether scale supports a fungal cause, which products to stop, and whether a sample or prescription treatment is needed.
