Can ringworm be cleared with treatment?

A rash that returns does not always mean the medicine failed. Treatment may have been stopped too soon, applied inconsistently, or used for a different condition. Reinfection can occur from an untreated household contact, animal, nail infection, damp clothing or shared equipment. Persistent colour change after the active rash settles can also be mistaken for ongoing infection.

Use the recommended antifungal for the complete advised course and keep the area dry. Wash towels, clothes and bedding regularly, avoid sharing them, and clean items that touch the rash. Check for itchy or scaly patches elsewhere and mention them during review. If infection involves nails, hair-bearing skin or a broad area, a clinician may recommend oral antifungal treatment and assess possible sources of reinfection.

Book an assessment when the rash returns repeatedly, continues despite correct treatment, spreads, becomes painful or develops drainage. Seek prompt care for facial or eye-area involvement, extensive inflammation, or infection in someone with reduced immunity. Examination can distinguish active ringworm from eczema, irritation or lingering pigment change.

Ask whether the diagnosis should be confirmed, whether a nail or pet could be a source, how long to continue treatment, and which cleaning measures are actually needed.
