What should you know about ringworm on my back?

Back ringworm may begin as a small itchy or flaky area and gradually enlarge. Its edge can look more inflamed or raised than the centre. Because the back is difficult to inspect, a partner may notice changes before you do. A rash on the back is not automatically ringworm; eczema, irritation, and other conditions can look similar.

Use a mirror or ask someone you trust to check whether the patch is changing. Keep the skin dry after bathing, wear clean breathable clothing, and avoid sharing towels or shirts. Follow the directions for an advised topical antifungal treatment. If there are several patches, the area is broad, or treatment is unsuitable, a clinician may consider oral antifungal treatment.

Book an assessment if the diagnosis is uncertain, the patch continues to enlarge, or symptoms return after treatment. Prompt care is appropriate for marked pain, pus, warmth, fever, or fast spread. Mention pregnancy, regular medicines, liver problems, and immune conditions before taking an oral antifungal medicine.

Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, whether anyone sharing your home should be checked, and which clothing and laundry measures are sensible. Tell the clinician when the back patch began and whether it has appeared elsewhere.
