Ringworm on the abdomen: what to know

On the abdomen, ringworm often begins as a small area that gradually enlarges. The outer edge may be more raised, red, or scaly than the centre, and itch can range from absent to bothersome. Several conditions can imitate this pattern, such as eczema, psoriasis, a reaction to a product, or another infection. The rash can spread to nearby skin through contact and may transfer to another person through shared towels or clothing. A clinician can confirm whether the pattern fits a fungal infection.

Keep the abdomen clean and thoroughly dry, especially after exercise or bathing. Wear clean, breathable clothing and change it when damp. Wash hands after touching the patch, launder clothing and towels regularly, and avoid sharing them. Do not scratch, scrape, or apply a steroid-only cream without advice. For confirmed ringworm limited to the skin, a clinician or pharmacist may recommend topical antifungal treatment. Oral antifungal treatment can be used when a clinician considers the infection too widespread, persistent, or unsuitable for topical care.

Arrange a medical review if the patch keeps expanding, several areas develop, the skin cracks, or the diagnosis is unclear. Seek prompt attention for significant pain, warmth, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, or involvement of the face or eye. People with diabetes, immune suppression, or repeated episodes should obtain tailored advice before self-treating.
