Ringworm near the eye: what to know

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, despite its name; it is not caused by a worm. Near the eye, it may appear as an itchy or irritated patch with a more active, flaky edge and clearer skin toward the centre. A rash in this area can also have other causes, including eczema, contact irritation, or infection, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis. The rash may affect the eyelid or nearby facial skin without involving the eye itself.

Arrange a clinician or dermatologist assessment, especially if the eyelid is involved. Keep the area clean and dry, wash your hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, pillowcases, cosmetics, or face cloths. Do not apply steroid cream or a combination cream unless a clinician has advised it, because steroids can alter a fungal rash. Use only a treatment specifically recommended for the location, and keep any cream away from the eye. A clinician may choose topical antifungal treatment or, when the area or infection calls for it, oral antifungal treatment.

Seek prompt medical care for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or changed vision, marked eyelid swelling, pus, fever, or redness spreading into the eye area. These signs may indicate that the eye or surrounding tissues need assessment rather than self-treatment. Arrange a review if the rash is spreading, keeps returning, or does not improve with an appropriate plan.
