What should you know about ringworm in shih tzu?

On a Shih Tzu, ringworm may appear as broken hairs, bald spots, flaky or crusted skin, redness, or mild itching. The long coat can hide early changes, and some dogs have limited irritation. Allergies, mites, bacterial infection, and coat-related irritation can look similar, so a photograph or visual guess is not enough to identify the cause.

A veterinarian may examine hairs and scale, use a specialised light, or send samples for testing. Tell the clinic before arrival if ringworm is suspected so they can advise on reducing contact with other animals.

Follow the veterinarian's plan, which may combine a topical antifungal treatment with oral antifungal treatment when the infection is widespread or involves many hairs.
