Ringworm in pigs: what people should know

Ringworm is a fungal infection rather than a worm. An infected pig may have circular or irregular areas of hair loss, scaling, crusting, or irritation, although appearance alone cannot confirm the cause. People who handle the animal, bedding, tools, or enclosure can develop an itchy rash on exposed skin. A rash after contact is not proof that ringworm caused it, because dermatitis and other infections can look similar. A veterinarian should assess the pig, while a clinician can examine any human symptoms.

Limit direct handling until veterinary advice is available, and wear gloves and protective clothing for necessary care. Wash hands and exposed skin with soap and water, launder clothing and bedding, and clean equipment according to veterinary guidance. Do not share towels or clothing. Arrange care for a new human rash rather than using animal medicine on yourself. If ringworm is confirmed in a person, a clinician may recommend a topical antifungal treatment; widespread or difficult infection may need an oral antifungal treatment.

Seek medical advice for a spreading, painful, crusted, or draining rash, or when several household members develop skin changes after animal contact. Arrange prompt review for a child, pregnant person, or anyone with reduced immunity. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe illness. Contact a veterinarian promptly for a pig with worsening lesions or poor general health.

Ask whether the rash should be tested, what protective measures are suitable, whether other people need examination, and how long to continue treatment after symptoms begin improving.
