Ringworm in the mouth: what to know

The term ringworm describes dermatophyte fungi and does not refer to a worm. These fungi generally grow on the outer skin rather than moist mouth tissue. White patches, soreness, redness, altered taste, or cracking at the corners of the lips may have other causes. A clinician may inspect the mouth, ask about medicines and health conditions, and decide whether a swab or another test is appropriate. Arrange a medical or dental assessment instead of applying a skin cream inside the mouth. Keep oral-care items personal, rinse after inhaled steroid use if prescribed, and follow the product directions for any treatment recommended. If a clinician confirms a fungal infection, treatment may involve an oral antifungal treatment; a topical antifungal treatment is intended for suitable skin surfaces, not automatically for the mouth. Do not scrape patches or share toothbrushes.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, dehydration, or severe illness. Prompt assessment is also sensible when mouth sores persist, recur, bleed, or make eating difficult, particularly in a child or someone with reduced immunity. Fever with spreading redness needs timely medical review.

Ask whether the appearance fits thrush, an ulcer, irritation, or another infection; whether a test is needed; which medicines may contribute; and how to prevent recurrence or spread to household members.
