Short answer

Ringworm in kittens is a contagious fungal infection that may cause hair loss, scaling, or crusts, so a veterinarian should guide treatment and household cleaning.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common clues
Patchy hair loss, scale, crusts, or broken hairs.
Spread
Spores move through animal contact and contaminated items.
Care
Veterinary treatment and environmental cleaning work together.

What it can look like

Kittens may develop round or uneven bald patches, broken hairs, dry scale, crusts, or mild redness, often around the ears, face, paws, or tail. Some kittens have little itch, while others scratch. Fungal spores can remain on bedding, carriers, brushes, and furniture and can spread to other animals or people.

Not every bald patch is ringworm. Mites, allergies, injury, and bacterial infection can look similar. A veterinarian may use examination and testing to identify the cause and decide whether treatment is needed for the kitten, its environment, or other household animals.

Caring for a kitten with suspected ringworm

Arrange veterinary care rather than using a household product or leftover medicine. Follow the prescribed topical wash, cream, or oral antifungal plan and complete it as directed. Keep the kitten in an easy-to-clean area if advised, and separate grooming tools, bedding, and toys from those used by other pets.

Remove loose hair safely, wash bedding, vacuum areas the kitten visits, and use a veterinarian-approved disinfectant on suitable surfaces. Wear gloves, wash hands, and change clothing after close handling. Children, older adults, and people with reduced immunity should avoid direct contact until advice is given.

When veterinary care is urgent

Seek prompt veterinary help if the kitten is weak, stops eating, has widespread lesions, pus, marked swelling, eye involvement, or a painful swollen area. Contact a doctor if a person develops an itchy, scaly rash after handling the kitten, and tell the doctor about the animal exposure.

Questions for the veterinarian

Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, which treatment is safe for a young kitten, how to clean the home, whether other pets need testing, and when normal contact can resume.

Questions people ask

Can kitten ringworm infect people?

Yes. Handle the kitten carefully, wash hands, and seek medical advice for a new scaly or itchy rash.

Should I shave a kitten with ringworm?

Do not shave without veterinary guidance; clipping can irritate skin or spread spores and may not suit every kitten.
