Ringworm in the groin area: what to know

The rash may begin on the inner thigh or groin fold and develop a more active, scaly edge as it expands. It can be red, brown or darker than nearby skin, depending on your skin tone. Sweating, friction and tight clothing can make irritation more noticeable. The penis, scrotum or vulva are less typical sites for classic groin ringworm, so involvement there deserves a clinician’s assessment. A rash in this region can also have other causes; appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Keep the area clean and thoroughly dry, change underwear after sweating, and choose loose, breathable clothing. Do not share towels, clothing or sports equipment, and wash items that touch the rash.
