Ringworm on the human scalp

Fungi can grow in the outer scalp and around hair shafts. This may create flaky or scaly patches, itching, redness, soreness, and hairs that break close to the surface. The affected areas may appear less dense, and some people develop small dark stubs where hairs have snapped. A tender, raised swelling can occur when inflammation is stronger. Appearance alone is not enough to separate ringworm from dandruff, eczema, psoriasis, or other scalp conditions, so examination is useful.

Have a clinician assess suspected infection, especially when there is patchy hair breakage. Treatment for human scalp ringworm often includes an oral antifungal because the infection can sit within the hair shaft. A medicated shampoo can support hygiene and reduce surface spread when prescribed. Wash hands after touching the area; keep combs, brushes, caps, towels, bedding, and clippers from being shared; and clean items that contact the scalp. Ask about household members and pets because they can sometimes carry fungi without an obvious rash. Avoid scratching and abrasive scalp products.

Get prompt advice for a painful or soft swollen patch, pus, thick crusting, fever, or quick expansion. These features can reflect active inflammation that needs treatment to protect the follicles. Seek urgent help if swelling spreads toward the eyes or face, or if you feel very unwell. Arrange follow-up if new broken hairs appear after treatment starts or if the scalp remains inflamed.

Ask whether a hair or skin sample would clarify the diagnosis, how long treatment should continue, whether shampoo is needed, and how to manage school, work, sport, or haircuts while infection is being treated. Mention other medicines and medical conditions before starting tablets.
