What is the fungus behind ringworm?

The fungus can pass during holds, drills, and competition, or through mats, towels, clothing, headgear, and shared equipment. The rash may be itchy, circular or irregular, raised at its edge, and scaly. A skin rash has several possible causes, so appearance alone cannot confirm ringworm.

Pause close-contact training until a clinician or team medical professional assesses the rash and advises return. Use topical antifungal treatment as directed; wider or difficult infection may need oral antifungal treatment. Keep skin clean and dry, wash training clothes, and do not share towels, clothing, razors, or equipment. Tell the coach so cleaning and contact checks can be arranged.

Arrange review if the rash spreads, involves scalp or nails, returns, or fails to improve. Seek prompt care for marked pain, pus, warmth, swelling, fever, or rapidly worsening redness. A clinician may test a scale sample when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Ask whether the rash is ringworm, which treatment suits its location, when wrestling can resume, and how contacts should manage exposure.
