What should you know about ringworm for years?

A fungal rash can remain when treatment is stopped as soon as the surface looks clearer, when the medicine does not reach the affected area, or when the diagnosis is mistaken for eczema or another scaly condition. It can also return after contact with an infected person, animal, clothing, towels, or shared equipment. A long-standing rash may be active, repeatedly reintroduced, or unrelated to fungus. Examination and, when appropriate, a skin scraping can separate these possibilities.

Book a review before repeating old medication. Take the product name, how often you used it, and the response you noticed. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid sharing towels or clothing, and wash fabrics that contact the rash. Do not combine several creams without advice; steroid-containing products can mask fungal features. Depending on location, extent, and prior treatment, a clinician may recommend a topical antifungal or an oral antifungal. Follow the prescribed course and return if the border expands or scale persists.

Seek prompt care if the rash is painful, hot, draining, rapidly spreading, or accompanied by fever. Arrange timely assessment for facial or scalp involvement, extensive disease, repeated relapses, or reduced immunity. A rash that has persisted for years should not be labelled ringworm indefinitely without checking the diagnosis.

Ask whether the appearance still fits ringworm, whether testing is needed, and whether another condition could explain the scale. Ask how to prevent reinfection, whether household contacts or pets should be checked, and what sign would mean the treatment needs changing.
