Ringworm on the Ear: Symptoms and Care

Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin. On the outer ear, it may appear as redness, itch, fine scale, cracking, or a patch with a clearer centre and a more active edge. It can extend onto the hairline, cheek, or neck through scratching or contact. The ear canal is a sensitive structure; itch or flaking at the opening does not establish the diagnosis, and symptoms deeper inside the ear may indicate dermatitis, bacterial infection, or another ear condition.

Keep the outer ear dry after washing and avoid cotton swabs, scratching, and shared headphones or towels. Do not put skin creams, oils, or antifungal products into the ear canal unless a clinician has prescribed them for that purpose. A clinician can inspect the skin and ear canal, and may choose topical antifungal treatment for external skin. Oral antifungal treatment is sometimes considered when infection is extensive or difficult to reach.

Arrange medical review for an expanding rash, crusting, recurrent flaking, or symptoms that do not improve with suitable care. Seek prompt assessment for ear discharge, worsening pain, swelling that narrows the canal, reduced hearing, dizziness, or a rash near the eye. Fever, severe pain, or rapidly spreading redness needs urgent attention. These symptoms require examination because a skin fungus is not the only possible explanation.

Ask whether the change is limited to outer-ear skin, whether testing is needed, and which product can be used safely near the canal. Tell the clinician about swimming, earbuds, recent antibiotics, and any skin rash elsewhere.
