Ringworm or Dry Skin: How to Tell the Difference

Ringworm is a fungal infection that can produce scale, cracking, and itch as it expands across the outer skin. Dry skin, also called xerosis, more often causes diffuse tightness and fine flaking without a distinct advancing border. Asteatotic eczema can create fine cracks, while atopic dermatitis may bring itch and inflamed patches. Psoriasis can produce thicker, well-defined scale. These conditions can overlap in appearance, and a rash’s location, shape, duration, and response to products help guide the assessment.

Use a gentle cleanser, lukewarm water, and a plain moisturiser on genuinely dry areas. Apply emollient therapy regularly, particularly after washing, but avoid sharing towels. If a patch is enlarging, has a raised scaly margin, or affects someone else in the household, arrange medical review before treating it as ordinary dryness. Avoid steroid cream alone unless a clinician has advised it; it can mask a fungal infection. A confirmed ringworm infection may need topical or oral antifungal treatment depending on its site and extent.

Seek advice for a persistent or spreading patch, marked itch, painful fissures, oozing, or skin changes on the scalp, face, or near the eye. Get prompt assessment when moisturising does not help and the rash continues to enlarge. Rapid swelling, warmth, pus, fever, or severe pain warrants urgent care because infection or another inflammatory condition may be present.

Ask whether the appearance fits ringworm, eczema, psoriasis, or uncomplicated dry skin, and whether a skin scraping is needed. Mention new soaps, household exposure, allergies, and every cream you have applied.
