Can Ringworm Pass from Dogs to Humans?

Ringworm is a fungal infection affecting the outer skin, hair, or nails. A dog can carry spores on its coat, especially when it has hair loss, broken hairs, crusts, or scaling. Contact with the animal, its bedding, collars, towels, or grooming tools can move spores to human skin. The condition often produces an itchy, ring-shaped or irregular patch with a more active scaly edge. Not every rash after pet contact is ringworm, so the pattern and examination matter.

Arrange veterinary assessment for the dog and follow the animal’s treatment plan. Wash hands after handling it, launder bedding and towels, and clean grooming equipment as directed. Avoid sharing personal towels or clothing, and keep any suspected rash covered when practical without trapping moisture. Do not use steroid cream alone on a possible fungal rash because it may alter the appearance and allow it to extend. A clinician may recommend topical antifungal treatment, while oral antifungal treatment can be considered when infection is widespread, persistent, or involves hair or nails.

Book an assessment if a rash enlarges, develops a raised scaly border, or fails to settle with appropriate care. Seek prompt advice for scalp involvement, broken skin, pus, significant pain, or lesions near the eye. Contact a clinician sooner if your immune system is weakened or several household members develop symptoms. Fever, rapidly increasing redness, or facial swelling needs urgent evaluation because these features can signal a different or more serious skin problem.

Ask how the diagnosis will be confirmed, whether household contacts should be checked, and how long to continue treatment. Tell the clinician whether the dog has been examined and whether anyone else has a rash.
