What ringworm may look like on day one

Early ringworm may begin as a subtle area of scale, dryness, or altered colour before a clearer ring or raised edge develops. Some people notice itch or tenderness; others notice only a patch that looks different. A new rash can also result from irritation, eczema, an insect bite, or another infection. The word ringworm describes a fungal cause, not a guaranteed shape, so avoid diagnosing it from a single photograph or from the first few hours of change.

Mark the outer edge lightly with a washable pen or photograph it in good light, then watch for enlargement without repeatedly rubbing the skin. Keep the patch dry, wash hands after contact, and do not share towels, clothing, or sports gear. A pharmacist can advise whether a topical antifungal is reasonable for a small area. Medical review is preferable when the diagnosis is unclear, the location is sensitive, or the rash is on the scalp or nails, where oral treatment may be needed. Avoid steroid-only creams unless a clinician has advised them for a confirmed reason.

Arrange care if the patch expands, several patches appear, or there is no clear improvement after the advised treatment period. Seek prompt assessment for fever, pus, increasing pain, marked swelling, facial or eye involvement, or rapid spread. These signs can point to a more serious skin problem or an additional infection.
