Where does ringworm come from?

The fungi can pass through skin-to-skin contact or through towels, clothing, bedding, brushes, mats, and sports equipment. Cats, dogs, and other animals can carry the infection and may have obvious bald or scaly patches, though signs are not always easy to spot. Heat, moisture, sweating, tight clothing, and small breaks in the skin can make growth easier. Ringworm is a fungal infection, not a worm infestation.

Keep affected skin clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing personal items. Launder clothing, towels, and bedding regularly and let them dry fully. Do not scratch or pick at the rash. If an animal may be involved, arrange a veterinary check rather than treating it with human medicine. Follow the complete treatment plan and ask whether household contacts need assessment.

Get medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, nails, beard, or a large area, or if it continues to spread. Seek prompt care for pus, fever, severe pain, facial swelling, or rapidly worsening redness. A rash that does not improve with an appropriate antifungal may need testing because eczema and other conditions can look similar.
