Ringworm: is it actually a worm?

The name describes the ring-like shape some infections make, not an animal living under the skin. The fungus grows in the outer layer and may produce itch, scale, cracking, or a raised edge that spreads outward. Some patches are not neatly circular, and different skin tones can change how redness appears. Ringworm can affect the body, feet, groin, scalp, or nails, with the site influencing the treatment.

It can pass through direct contact or contaminated items such as towels, clothing, brushes, and sports equipment. A rash that resembles ringworm may instead be eczema or another skin condition, so persistent or unusual changes deserve assessment.

Keep affected skin dry and avoid sharing personal items. Follow the full directions for an antifungal treatment recommended for the body site; stopping as soon as itch settles can leave infection behind. Do not apply a steroid alone to an undiagnosed ring-like rash. Wash clothing, towels, and bedding that touch the area, and clean or replace items that cannot be washed. If a pet has bald, scaly patches, veterinary advice can help reduce reinfection.

Seek care when the rash involves the scalp, beard, nails, face near the eye, or a large area, because these sites may need a different approach. Prompt review is also sensible for pus, marked swelling, severe pain, fever, rapid spread, or no improvement with directed treatment. Scalp involvement can damage follicles when inflammation is strong.
