What should you know about ring shaped rash?

A scaly edge that expands outward can fit Ringworm, while irritation from a product or adhesive may create Contact Dermatitis. Atopic Dermatitis and Psoriasis can produce defined, inflamed patches. Heat, sweat, and rubbing may cause Heat Rash or Intertrigo, especially in warm or folded areas. A Drug Rash may appear after a new medicine and can involve more than one body region. Consider the border, centre, colour, scale, tenderness, and speed of change rather than relying on the shape alone.

Take a photograph, note recent exposures and medicines, and keep the skin cool, clean, and dry. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, tight clothing, and unprescribed steroid combinations. Wash hands after touching the area and do not share towels or clothing if infection is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can match treatment to the pattern; covering the rash heavily may trap moisture and make assessment harder.

Arrange a medical review if the rash persists, spreads, recurs, becomes scaly, or affects the face, genitals, or nails. Seek urgent help for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, blistering, mouth or eye involvement, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty. A rash beginning soon after a medicine should be reported promptly.

Ask whether the border needs a sample or other test, which diagnosis is most consistent with the location, and how long to use any treatment. Explain when it began, what changed first, and whether anyone else has a similar mark.
