What should you know about ring rash on leg?

Ringworm often produces a scaly, more active edge that gradually expands, but not every ring-shaped rash is ringworm. Contact with a product, adhesive, plant, or fabric can cause Contact Dermatitis. Moisture and rubbing in skin folds can contribute to Intertrigo, while heat and sweat may trigger Heat Rash. Psoriasis or Atopic Dermatitis can also form defined patches. Record whether the centre clears, whether the edge is raised, and whether the area is itchy, sore, warm, or oozing.

Keep the leg clean and dry, wear breathable clothing, and reduce rubbing. Wash hands after touching the rash and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or sports equipment while a contagious infection remains possible. Take a dated photograph to compare changes. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antifungal, anti-inflammatory, or different approach fits the appearance; steroid use can disguise some fungal rashes.

Arrange an appointment if the rash is enlarging, recurring, spreading to other people, or not settling with appropriate care. Seek urgent help if the leg becomes rapidly red, hot, swollen, and painful, or if you develop fever, pus, red streaks, facial swelling, or breathing trouble. A rash after a new medicine needs prompt medical advice.

Ask whether the border needs testing, how long treatment should continue, and how to prevent spread at home. Tell the clinician about new products, medicines, gym or pool exposure, pets, and anyone else with a similar rash.
