Short answer

A right wrist sprain is a stretched or torn wrist ligament that can cause pain, swelling, bruising, and reduced movement after a fall, twist, or sudden load.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Fall, twist, or sudden force through the wrist
Common features
Pain, swelling, bruising, and limited movement
Support options
Activity modification, splinting, and guided rehabilitation

Understanding the injury

Ligaments connect bones and help guide wrist movement. A sprain may be mild, or it may involve a more substantial ligament injury. Wrist pain, tenderness, swelling, and pain when turning a key or gripping are common features. A fracture, tendon injury, or dislocation can produce similar symptoms, particularly after a fall onto the hand, so appearance alone cannot confirm a sprain. An examination considers the injury mechanism, tender areas, movement, strength, sensation, and circulation; an X-ray may be needed when a bone injury is possible.

What to do

During the early period, protect the wrist from lifting and twisting, use a wrapped cold pack for short intervals, raise the hand, and keep the fingers moving gently. Remove rings if swelling is developing. A splint can limit painful movement, but it should not be so tight that fingers become numb, pale, blue, or cold. As pain and swelling settle, gradual motion and strengthening can help restore use. Physiotherapy may guide this progression when stiffness, weakness, or work demands continue to be a problem.

When to seek care

Seek urgent assessment if the wrist looks crooked, the hand becomes numb or cold, fingers change colour, or you cannot move the wrist or fingers. Arrange prompt review after a significant fall, with severe tenderness over a bone, or when swelling and pain are worsening. If symptoms are not improving or normal use remains difficult, a clinician should reassess the diagnosis and support needed.

Questions for your doctor

Could this be a fracture rather than a sprain? Should I wear a splint, and for which activities? When should wrist motion begin? What symptoms mean I need repeat assessment?

Questions people ask

Can a wrist sprain cause bruising?

Yes. Ligament and nearby soft-tissue injury can cause bruising and swelling, although these signs can also occur with a fracture.

Should a sprained wrist stay completely still?

Short-term protection can help, but prolonged complete immobilisation may increase stiffness. Follow a clinician's advice on when to begin gentle movement.
