What should you know about right thoracic outlet syndrome?

Short answer
Right thoracic outlet syndrome may cause pain, tingling, numbness, heaviness, or colour and temperature changes in the right arm when structures near the shoulder outlet are compressed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Affected side
- Right arm, shoulder, or hand
- Possible triggers
- Overhead activity, load carrying, or sustained posture
- Structures involved
- Nerves or blood vessels near the thoracic outlet
What it means
The thoracic outlet is a narrow passage between the lower neck and upper chest. Nerves, arteries, and veins travel through it toward the arm. Symptoms can change with arm position, overhead work, carrying loads, repetitive activity, or rounded-shoulder posture. Nerve compression may produce arm numbness and tingling, hand numbness, aching, or reduced grip. Blood-vessel involvement can cause swelling, unusual paleness or blueness, or a hand that feels colder than the other side. Several neck, shoulder, and arm problems can look similar, so examination is needed before assigning the cause.
What to do next
Arrange a clinical assessment if symptoms keep returning or limit work, sleep, or arm use. Until then, reduce activities that reliably trigger symptoms, avoid carrying a heavy bag on the right shoulder, and change positions regularly. Physiotherapy may address chest and neck flexibility, shoulder-blade control, breathing mechanics, and gradual strengthening. Postural correction therapy may be included when body position narrows the passage. Do not force stretches that increase numbness, swelling, or colour change.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for sudden arm swelling, marked colour change, a cold hand, severe new pain, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Prompt review is also appropriate for progressive weakness, persistent loss of sensation, or a hand that becomes clumsy. These features can indicate more than a position-related nerve irritation and should not be managed with exercises alone.
Questions for your doctor
Do my symptoms suggest nerve, artery, or vein involvement? Which positions should I avoid? Would physiotherapy be appropriate? What changes in hand colour, temperature, swelling, or strength require urgent help?

Questions people ask
Can posture contribute to right thoracic outlet symptoms?
Yes. Rounded shoulders or sustained neck and shoulder positions can increase pressure in the passage for some people.
Should I exercise through numbness?
No. Stop or modify an exercise that increases numbness, swelling, colour change, or coldness, and ask a clinician for a safer progression.
