Right-Side Lip Swollen: What It Can Mean

A bitten lip, dental irritation, cold sore, inflamed spot, or contact with a new food, cosmetic, toothpaste, or medicine can cause local swelling. Angioedema is a deeper swelling that may affect the lips, eyelids, tongue, or throat and can occur with hives or without them. One-sided swelling may reflect a local trigger, but the side alone does not identify the cause. Note whether the area is painful, warm, blistered, itchy, numb, or associated with tooth pain.

Stop a suspected new cosmetic, food, or oral product and rinse the mouth if an irritating substance may be involved. Use a cool compress and avoid squeezing, puncturing, or applying harsh home remedies. If swelling began after a prescribed medicine, seek prompt clinical advice before taking another dose. Photograph the lip and record the timing, associated rash, dental symptoms, and any previous episodes. A clinician or dentist can assess the local cause and decide on treatment.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. Seek prompt medical care for fever, spreading redness, pus, severe pain, a painful blistering rash near the eye, or swelling that does not settle. Recurrent episodes deserve medical review even when they resolve.
