What should you know about right hand thumb swelling?

Short answer
Right thumb swelling can follow an injury, tendon irritation, joint inflammation, or a skin problem, and pain or circulation changes determine how quickly to seek care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Check
- Look for injury, warmth, redness, wound, numbness, and restricted movement.
- Avoid
- Do not puncture a swollen thumb or force painful gripping.
Possible causes
Swelling after a knock, fall, or awkward bend may indicate a sprain or fracture. Wrist-side thumb swelling with pain during gripping can occur with De Quervain's Tenosynovitis, a tendon condition. Swelling at the thumb joint may instead reflect irritation inside or around the joint.
Warmth and stiffness in the thumb or other hand joints can occur with inflammatory arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. A torn cuticle, bite, puncture, or nail-fold problem can cause local infection. Look at the skin, check movement gently, and note whether swelling is spreading. Hand Swelling gives wider symptom information.
What to do at home
Remove rings or tight jewellery from the hand. Rest from painful pinching and gripping, keep the hand raised, and use a cloth-wrapped cool pack briefly after a minor injury. Gentle thumb movement is reasonable if it does not increase pain or numbness.
Avoid squeezing, puncturing, or draining a swollen area yourself. Do not tightly strap the thumb when sensation or circulation is abnormal. Record when the swelling began, any injury or bite, skin changes, and whether grip or movement has altered; this can make an assessment more useful.
Urgent warning signs
Get urgent help for a deformed thumb, severe pain, inability to move it, new numbness, a cold or pale thumb, blue colour, or rapidly increasing swelling. Redness that spreads, marked warmth, pus, fever, or severe tenderness around a wound also needs prompt assessment.
Arrange a review if swelling persists, returns, or limits writing, dressing, lifting, or sleep. Symptoms after a fall should be assessed when movement remains restricted, even if the thumb looks normal.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the swelling is centred on a tendon, joint, bone, or skin; whether imaging is needed; and whether a thumb or wrist support would help. Ask which changes mean you should seek urgent care and how to return to normal use.

Questions people ask
Can a swollen thumb be caused by a tendon problem?
Yes. Tendon irritation can produce swelling and pain near the wrist-side base of the thumb, especially with gripping or lifting.
When is thumb swelling an emergency?
Urgent care is needed for severe pain, deformity, inability to move, colour or temperature change, numbness, rapid swelling, or infection signs.
