Right groin muscle strain: what to know

How the structures involved in Muscle Strain differ from normal

Short answer

A right groin muscle strain is an overstretch or tear in muscles that bring the leg inward, often causing pain with walking, running, or changing direction.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pain pattern
Inner-thigh or groin pain with leg movement and loading
Early focus
Reduce provoking activity and preserve comfortable movement

What may be happening

The groin includes the adductor muscles on the inner thigh. A strain can occur during a sudden split-step, sprint, kick, slip, or forceful change of direction, and it may also build after repeated exercise. Pain can be sharp at the moment of injury or become sore later. Bruising, tenderness, muscle spasm, or difficulty bringing the legs together may occur. Hip, abdominal, back, or pelvic problems can feel similar, so groin pain is not proof of a muscle tear. Tell a clinician about a bulge, testicular pain, urinary symptoms, or pain linked with coughing because those clues suggest other causes.

What to do now

Stop sprinting, kicking, and wide-leg movements that reproduce pain. During the early phase, protect the area and use a wrapped cold pack for brief periods if it feels helpful. Walk only as comfortably as possible, then restore movement gradually. Once daily movement is easier, a physiotherapist can guide gentle adductor loading and progress strength before a return to sport. Warm up before resuming activity and increase intensity in stages. Avoid aggressive stretching or testing the injury at full speed.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment after a pop, major bruising, a visible gap or bulge, inability to walk normally, or rapidly increasing swelling. Urgent care is also appropriate for severe abdominal or groin pain, testicular pain, fever, or vomiting. Book a review if symptoms are not improving, keep returning, or prevent normal work and exercise.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which structure is injured, whether imaging is useful, when strengthening should begin, and what functional tests should be passed before returning to sport.

Questions people ask

Should I stretch a groin strain?

Avoid forceful stretching at first; gentle comfortable movement and staged strengthening are usually more appropriate.

When can I return to sport?

Return when walking, resisted movement, and sport-specific drills are comfortable and strength has been rebuilt progressively.
