Right forearm pain after golf: what it can mean

Short answer

Right forearm pain after golf often reflects overworked muscles or tendon irritation, so reduce the provoking swing and monitor function.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common trigger
Repetitive gripping and wrist movement during practice or play
Useful clue
Pain location, timing, grip weakness, and any tingling

What the pain may mean

Repeated gripping, wrist hinging, or striking the ground can load the muscles that turn the forearm and move the wrist. Pain near the inner elbow may occur with golfer’s elbow, while outer-elbow discomfort can occur with tennis elbow. A forearm ache can also follow a sudden increase in practice, a changed grip, or equipment that makes you work harder. Pain alone cannot identify its cause. Note whether it began during one swing, builds during play, or remains at rest. Weak grip, tingling, bruising, or restricted wrist movement gives a clinician useful additional information.

What to do now

Pause golf and other painful gripping for a short period, while keeping the elbow, wrist, and fingers moving gently within a comfortable range. A wrapped cold pack may calm a recent flare; protect the skin and stop if it increases discomfort. Resume practice gradually only when everyday movements are easier, beginning with shorter sessions and a relaxed grip. A physiotherapist can review swing mechanics, strength, and flexibility. Do not push through sharp pain or repeatedly test the painful shot.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain is worsening, keeps returning, limits work or sleep, or has not started settling with activity modification. Seek urgent care after a major injury, visible deformity, sudden loss of strength, a cold or pale hand, or new numbness that does not ease. Chest pressure, breathlessness, faintness, or pain spreading into the arm needs emergency attention rather than a golf-related explanation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which tendon or muscle is involved, whether you need imaging, how to modify your swing, and which exercises are appropriate at each stage.

Questions people ask

Should I keep playing through right forearm pain?

Avoid the swing or grip that causes pain and return gradually after everyday movement improves.

Could elbow tendon irritation cause forearm pain?

Yes. Inner- or outer-elbow tendon irritation can be felt into the forearm, but an examination helps distinguish causes.
