Right facial cellulitis: what to know

The affected skin may feel hot, tight, painful, and increasingly swollen. Redness can expand over hours, and fever or chills may occur. Small breaks such as scratches, bites, acne, eczema cracks, or an infection elsewhere such as Athlete's Foot can provide an entry point for bacteria.

Facial infection deserves attention because swelling can involve tissues near the eye or mouth. Type 2 Diabetes and other conditions that affect immune response may alter risk and healing, so mention them during assessment.

Contact a medical service promptly for new, spreading facial redness or swelling. A clinician may prescribe antibiotics and will decide whether oral treatment, observation, or hospital care is appropriate. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed and keep the area clean; do not squeeze, massage, or use leftover antibiotics.

Marking the edge of redness with a pen and noting the time can help show whether it is expanding, but this must not delay care. Rest, drink fluids if able, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you.

Seek emergency help for swelling around the eye, vision change, severe headache, confusion, faintness, breathing or swallowing difficulty, rapidly worsening pain, or feeling severely unwell. Fever with fast progression can signal a serious infection, including Sepsis, and needs immediate attention.

Ask where the infection is located, which treatment is needed, how soon improvement should begin, and which symptoms mean you should return urgently. Mention allergies, diabetes, recent wounds, and previous cellulitis.
