Right De Quervain's Release: What to Know

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis affects tendons that move the thumb as they pass through a narrow compartment. Repetitive gripping, lifting, or wrist deviation can make the lining swell and make thumb-side wrist pain worse. During De Quervain's Release, the surgeon identifies and opens the restrictive covering while protecting nearby structures. The right hand may feel sore, stiff, or numb around the incision early in recovery. The procedure is intended to create more room for tendon movement; it does not remove the need for gradual rehabilitation.

Follow the surgical team’s instructions about washing, eating, medicines, and arranging help after the procedure. Keep the dressing clean and dry, elevate the hand when it throbs, and move the fingers as advised. Avoid forceful gripping and lifting until the wound and tendons have been reviewed. Attend follow-up appointments so the incision, sensation, thumb motion, and strength can be checked. A hand therapist may guide scar care and exercises once healing allows.

Contact the surgical team promptly for increasing redness, warmth, drainage, wound separation, fever, or pain that is not settling. Seek urgent help if the fingers become blue, unusually cold, severely swollen, or difficult to move, or if new numbness is rapidly worsening. Protect the incision from soaking until you are told it is safe.

Ask which anaesthetic is planned, how the incision will be protected, when you may drive or work, and which thumb movements are allowed. Discuss expected scar sensitivity, hand therapy, pain relief, and the signs that should prompt an earlier review.
